Detailed Analysis of Thriller Clip in Class

Sunday 19th December 2010

The Analysis that I will be doing on the Thriller Clip from class will be on the film 'Momento'. I really like this particular movie when I watched the first couple of minutes in class, I never heard about this movie but when i watched the beginning in class, it made me want to watch the whole movie.

The Sub-Genre for the Movie 'Momento' is a Murderous and Action Thriller.

In the beginning of the scene, there is an over the shoulder, close up shot of a hand holding onto a photograph. The first impression that you get of the movie is from that photograph which consists of a dead body that is covered with blood. Instantly we are asking questions like who is this body, who killed this person and why. We are taken into the movie with expectations of violence.

After this particular scene, we are being taken back in time, from the end to the beginning of the scene of the person being dead. The mise en scene for this scene is placed in a basement where its underground so that the killer wants this to happen where no one can hear or see which shows that this murder that is being taken place is done secretly as most common action thriller movies are. It is in a confined area where their is hardly any light to show the killers' state of mind which connotes anger, hatred, vengeance etc. As the use of turning back in time is being done, we get aspects of the victims personals such as the glasses that he wears which might show that this guy is old and maybe educated with glasses being a stereotype for clever people. We also see a single bullet shell on the floor to show that the death was quick and simple. The killer was in a suit to show that this person is an average normal guy and not a typical killer with a ski mask.

The editing of this scene is very slow and smooth as we go to one scene to another, it contradicts a typical killer as it would be very fast paced. Each scene flows smoothly with another to show how detailed and percise the death was with one single shot, to show the after effect of what happened to the body and all its personals like the glasses.

The sounds that was being played was vey suspencful music with sharp notes to make the scene more sinister and very unhappy.

The titles in the beginning were very simple just appearing and dissapearing with a blue colour font. I think the use of the colour blue is done because blue is associated with the sky, as people day dream, something to do with the mind.

List of Thriller Sub-Genres and Which Inspires You At the Moment and Why

Sunday 19th December 2010

There are many different types of 'Thriiler' movies. In this case it is called a 'Hybrid Genre' - a Thriller mixed with another Genre.
Some of these Hybrid Genres for Thriller Movies are:
  • Supernatural Thriller  e.g Signs
  • Psychological Thriller  e.g The Shinning
  • Action Thriller  e.g Phone Booth
  • Innocent on the Run  e.g Enemy at the State
  • Acquired Identity  e.g Momento
  • Political Thriller  e.g The Firm
  • Murderous Passion  e.g Fatal Attractions
The Sub Genre that inspires me at the moment is Psychological Thrillers because unlike horror movies that are made for the audience to be scared by monsters and ghouls which are people in masks and makeup, Psychological Thrillers plays with the audiences mind, a very hard skill to do. The Psychological Thriller movie that I watched that does this perfectly is called 'The Shinning', this movies perfectly optimises what a Psychological Thriller movie is supposed to do, what is more mind chilling in this movie is the sinister sharp background music that is played when something bad is about to happen which we are left wondering whats going to happen, one specific part in the movie is when we as an audience are following the boy in the bike driving around the hotel, the camera is positioned at the back of the bike near to the floor so we are seeing what the boy is seeing, we are also left in a vulnerable position which is the ground as we are looking up - a sign in the subconscious that something is going to appear but we don't know what, the sinister music is being played while the mise en scene is just plain simple, we as an audience are clearly left in a position of unawareness as the music starts to gradually become more and more loud with very sharp sounds that makes us feel uncomfortable and scared.

Suspense

There are various factors that create suspense in a thriller. The themes of suspense contain victims, darkness, pauses, tense music, heavy breathing and visceral effect. A pause in a suspense links well with creating tension as the viewer is intriged to find whats yet to come. The theme of darkness can create a sense of fear, unknown and danger in a scense. Heavey breathing in a scene which is produced by a character can display either fear, ergency, tiredness and adrenaline from a victims point of view, whereas from the villians point of view it can display a sinister essence, eagereness to harm and danger. However the visceral effect creates  physical movement from the audience, this in turn causes an increased heartbeat which is formed from fear and tension.

During the attack of the shrak scene, we have a point of view shot where we are healf way in the water which makes the audience feel that they are actually in the water seeing and being attacked by the shark.
Another shot is deep down in the water looking up at the people, we as the aidience are being the shark.

Suspense

Suspense:
  • Visceral Effects - (Physical Actions) e.g. on the edge of your seat, trembling, jumpy, heart beating etc.
  • False Plateau - misleading the audience into false sense of security. The audience knows more then the character on the screen, Alfred Hitchcock's "Bomb Theory"
  • Tense Music to make the audience feel uncomfortable just like the character on screen
  • Begins with a sense of normality, then lets the suspense enter
  • Victims in the beginning to create suspense as the incident happens, to show fear,to make the audeince feel this from the victims' point of view.
